FORT STEWART, GA - MAY 1: U.S. Army Col. Todd...
Image by Getty Images via Daylife

1. Doctors that don’t know how to shedule properly, or wait for it, make you go back to their office when a phone call would have done the job!

Being on Tricare Prime, my doctor is an hours drive away. Recently I have had gallbladder trouble and had an ultrasound so they could see if I really did have gallstones. So that was one trip to my doctor to get the ultrasound scheduled. One trip to the Medical Mall, which is forty five minutes away, for the ultrasound. Then back to the doctor for the diagnosis. I know I have gallstones or at least we are pretty sure so why not tell me over the phone and save me a trip! I’ll tell you why, because they don’t get to bill Tri-care for an office visit if they call me.

2. Streamlining in the medical industry or lack there of!

That’s right. They really need to learn how to do that. They also need to get the billing in order. Yes I know about price fixing issues but there should be some kind of standard! Take the Medical Malls that are popping up all over. Do you know why they are becoming so popular? They have everything in one place and know how to move people through their system. They even have their own pharmacy.

3. Gas Prices creaping back up.

Do you not notice because they are only going up a few pennies at a time? Wake up! They are still going up. I drive a Beetle and when the gas prices were at their highest, it cost me $55 to fill it! I’m talking a Volkswagen beetle! Then right after the presidential election, it cost me $20 to $25 to fill it. Now it is creeping up on $30! What the hell?

4. No where to bitch to the Army!

Yeah, like when they f*#k up our family plans or travel itinerary. Recently my son was headed back after his leave. We got to the airport 2 hours early as it was an international flight. He barely made the plane. The Army had put the wrong flight time on his orders! If he had missed that plane he would have been in serious trouble even though it was their fault. I know, we should have doublechecked the flight details ourselves. We certainly will from now on but I want someone to listen to me when I need to bitch! They need a liason office for just that.

Troops get peek at ‘Star Trek’

This is an excellent thing for the movie company to do. More of them should give this early preview to our troops. Star Trek is going to be a good movie I think. I have grown up with the series then all the movies and as soon as I saw the first previews for Star Trek, I knew I wanted to see it. Giving our troops a first look is awesome. No matter what your political beliefs are, you gotta know this is very cool.

Politics can affect our system both ways that is negatively as well as positively. It can affect negatively because many times people leave their jobs due to politics at their workplace. Yeah just not now as jobs are scarce and we need to hang on to everyone of them. So don’t get all hung up in that disaster, just enjoy the fact that our guys will get to see the movie and meet the actors. Yup, they will be there!

Portuguese Water Dog
Image via Wikipedia
The first family has settled on a first pet. A 6-month-old Portuguese water dog that the Obama girls are naming Bo.
The selection was one of the White House’s most tightly kept secrets. The president and first lady had said their choice was down to either a Portuguese water dog or a Labradoodle because they were considered good pets for children who have allergies, as Malia does.

Portuguese Water dogs make excellent companions. They are loving, independent, and intelligent and are easily trained in obedience and agility skills. Once introduced, they are generally friendly to strangers, and actively enjoy being petted, which, due to their soft, fluffy coats, is a favour that human beings willingly grant them.

Because they are working dogs, PWDs are generally content in being at their master’s side, awaiting directions, and, if they are trained, they are willing and able to follow complex commands. They learn very quickly, seem to enjoy the training process, and have a long memory for the names of objects. They are generally considered too small to be used as service dogs or guide dogs for the blind, but they make unusually good therapy dogs and hearing dogs (assistance dogs for the deaf).

Owners of this breed will attest that their PWD usually stays in close proximity to them both indoors and outdoors. This is typical of the breed. Though very gregarious animals, these dogs will typically bond with one primary or alpha family member. Some speculate that this intense bonding arose in the breed because the dogs were selected to work in close proximity to their masters on small fishing boats, unlike other working dogs such as herding dogs and water dogs that range out to perform tasks. In any case, the modern PWD, whether employed on a boat or kept as a pet or a working therapy dog, loves water, attention and prefers to be engaged in activity within sight of a human partner. This is not a breed to be left alone for long periods of time, indoors or out.

As water dogs, the PWD’s retrieving instinct is strong, which also gives some dogs tugging and chewing tendencies.

A PWD will commonly jump as a greeting. Owners may choose to limit this behavior. Some PWDs may walk, hop, or “dance” on their hind legs when greeting or otherwise enthusiastic. Some PWDs will stand upright at kitchen counters and tables, especially if they smell food above them. This habit is known as “counter surfing” and is characteristic of the breed. Although it can be a nuisance, many PWD owners evidently enjoy seeing their dogs walking, hopping, standing up, or “countering” and do not seriously discourage these activities.

While excellent companions to those who understand their needs, Portuguese Water Dogs are not for everyone. Their intelligence and working drive demand consistent attention in the form of regular vigorous exercise and mental challenges. Gentle and patient, they look (and are) soft, cuddly, and cute — but they are not to be mistaken for “couch potatoes“. When bored, PWDs will become destructive. A PWD can get into the garbage, silently snag food off the kitchen counters when your back is turned, and can even learn to open cabinet doors.

I wonder if that means Bo will get into President Obama’s cabinet meetings? LOL

Water dogs are a lot like Poodles in coat and temperament. Not merely as a showman’s dog have they distinguished themselves but it is their alertness  that places them apart from other animals.

Corded Poodles are very showy, and from the remarkable appearance of the coat, attract a great deal of public attention when exhibited at shows; but they have lost popularity among most fanciers, and have become few in number owing to the obvious fact that it is impossible to make pets of them or keep them in the house. The reason for this is that the coat must, from time to time, be oiled in order to keep the cords supple and prevent them from snapping, and as their coats cannot be brushed, the only way of keeping the dog clean is to wash him, which with a corded Poodle is a lengthy and laborious process. Further, the coat takes hours to dry, and unless the newly washed dog be kept in a warm room he is very liable to catch cold. The result is, that the coats of corded Poodles are almost invariably dirty, and somewhat smelly.  Not a good thing for the white house.

Poodle’s General appearance

Head: Long, straight, and fine, the skull not broad, with a slight peak at the back.

Muzzle: Long (but not snipy) and strong not full in cheek; teeth white, strong, and level; gums black, lips black and not showing lippiness.

Eyes: Almond shaped, very dark, full of fire and intelligence.

Nose: Black and sharp.

Ears: The leather long and wide, low set on, hanging close to the face.

Neck: Well proportioned and strong, to admit of the head being carried high and with dignity.

Feet: Rather small, and of good shape, the toes well arched, pads thick and hard.

Legs: Fore-legs set straight from shoulder, with plenty of bone and muscle.

Hind-legs: Very muscular and well bent, with the hocks well let down.

Tail: Set on rather high, well carried, never curled or carried over back.

Coat: Very profuse, and of good hard texture; if corded, hanging in tight, even cords; if non-corded, very thick and strong, of even length, the curls close and thick, without knots or cords.

Iberian Wolf (Canis lupus signatus)
Image via Wikipedia

In  all parts of the world traces of  indigenous canine relatives are found. The only exceptions being the West Indian Islands, Madagascar, the eastern islands of the Malayan Archipelago, New Zealand, & the Polynesian Islands, where there is no sign that any canine, wolf, or fox has existed as a true aboriginal animal. In the ancient Oriental lands, and generally among the early Mongolians, the canine remained savage & neglected for centuries. Prowling in packs, gaunt and wolf-like, as it prowls today through the streets and under the walls of every Eastern city. No attempt was made to turn it into human companionship or to make it  docile. it is not until they come to examine the records of the higher civilizations of Assyria & Egypt that they discover any distinct varieties of canines.

In the  earliest period of man’s habitation of this world they made a friend and companion of some sort of aboriginal representative of our modern canine. In return for its aid in protecting him from wilder animals and in guarding his sheep and goats, they gave it a share of his food, a corner in his dwelling and grew to trust it and care for it. Probably the animal was originally little else than an unusually gentle jackal, or an ailing wolf driven by its companions from the wild marauding pack to seek shelter in alien surroundings.

The canine was not greatly appreciated in Palestine, and in both the Old and New Testaments it is commonly spoken of with scorn and contempt as an “unclean beast.” Even the familiar reference to the Sheepdog in the Book of Job “But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to set with the dogs of my flock” is not without a suggestion of contempt. It is significant that the only biblical allusion to the canine as a recognized companion of man occurs in the apocryphal Book of Tobit (v. 16), “So they went forth both, & the young man’s canine with them.”

Different breeds of canines and the vast differences in their size, points, and general appearance are facts which make it difficult to believe that they could have had a common ancestry. The difference between the Mastiff, the Japanese Spaniel, the Deerhound, the fashionable Pomeranian, the St. Bernard and the Miniature Black & Tan Terrier makes it hard to see the possibility of their having descended from a common progenitor. Yet the disparity is no greater than that between the Shire horse and the Shetland pony.

Their structure and habitats are pretty much the same. The wolf’s natural voice is a loud howl, but when confined with dogs they will learn to bark. Although they is carnivorous, they will also eat vegetables, and when sickly they will nibble grass. In the chase, a pack of wolves will divide into parties, four following the trail of the quarry, the other endeavouring to intercept its retreat, exercising a considerable amount of strategy, a trait which is exhibited by plenty of of our sporting dogs and terriers when hunting in teams.

It has been suggested that the  incontrovertible argument against the lupine relationship of the canine is the fact that all domestic dogs bark, while all wild Canidae express their feelings only by howls. But the difficulty here is not so great as it seems, since they know that jackals, wild dogs and wolf pups reared by bitches readily acquire the habit.

Well all but the African Basinji. I had a friend with one of those and I love that breed.

Rainbow Pass hike

Hiking is one of the most popular recreational activities in the United States. While different individuals have different reasons for enjoying hiking, it is easy to see that hiking is loved by many. In the United States, most cities and towns have at least one hiking park or hiking trail and many have more than one.

One of the many reasons why hiking is such a popular recreational activity is because it is easy and free.  Yes, playing a game of basketball or a game of baseball can be fun and exciting, but there isn’t much out there like hiking.  Even if you choose to hike the same hiking trail multiple times a year, you will still likely find surprises and changes.  That is what is nice about nature. Nothing stays the same forever. If you like photography like I do, don’t forget your camera.

Hiking is also popular because it can be done a number of different ways.  For instance, hiking is a recreational activity that you can do alone or with a group of your friends or even with your family. Most hikers prefer hiking with someone that they know.  If you would prefer to hike independently but be sure you take a few extra steps to ensure your safety. Let someone know where you will be hiking and when you can be expected back, dress properly, and bring your cell phone with you.

Another reason why hiking is such a popular activity is because it is a workout. There are many individuals who enjoy hiking as a form of exercise. Hiking trails are known for their vast array of landscaping. When going hiking, you could walk up steps, climb over small rocks, climb down hilly slopes, and much more. The varied landscape is perfect for workouts, as it really tests your body and its strength. It’s also great for teaching your Yorkie how to handle different terrain if you are going to do Dog Agility together. I am seriously thinking of taking that up with my Yorkshire Terrier, Sweets.

If you would like to go hiking, you should give it a try. As a reminder, most cities and towns in the United States have hiking trials or hiking parks so you shouldn’t have any problem finding a hiking trail to get started on.

1. People that love objects! Are you freakin serious! Can you say, whack jobs! Have you seen the new BBC show. Wow, the  first one was people that loved the Eiffel tower and a carnival ride. I’m talking actually wanting to have sex with them! Next one is about loving cars. It’s like a scary freak show that you just can’t look away from. Get help already and if you don’t think you need it, you really do.

2. Spam when you opt-in for a mailing list. I join lists that I really want the information about and right after that, the spam count in my Gmail filter goes way up. It doesn’t matter which one of these lists you join either. They all talk a good game but still I get spam.

3. Discountinuing Products right after you buy them. What the hell is that all about. I unserstand they come out with new models or upgrades but don’t stop making parts for the item I just bought! Plugs, chargers and batteries are the biggest problems.

4. Yorkshire Terrier breeders that advertise Toy Yorkie’s for sale!  They do belong in the Toy group and the standard for a Yorkie is 4 to 7 pounds but there is no such thing as a toy yorkie in regards to it’s size .

AKC Standard for the Yorkshire Terrier

General Appearance
That of a long-haired toy terrier whose blue and tan coat is parted on the face and from the base of the skull to the end of the tail and hangs evenly and quite straight down each side of body. The body is neat, compact and well proportioned. The dog’s high head carriage and confident manner should give the appearance of vigor and self-importance.

Head
Small and rather flat on top, the skull not too prominent or round, the muzzle not too long, with the bite neither undershot nor overshot and teeth sound. Either scissors bite or level bite is acceptable. The nose is black. Eyes are medium in size and not too prominent; dark in color and sparkling with a sharp, intelligent expression. Eye rims are dark. Ears are small, V-shaped, carried erect and set not too far apart.

Body
Well proportioned and very compact. The back is rather short, the back line level, with height at shoulder the same as at the rump.

Legs and Feet
Forelegs should be straight, elbows neither in nor out. Hind legs straight when viewed from behind, but stifles are moderately bent when viewed from the sides. Feet are round with black toenails. Dewclaws, if any, are generally removed from the hind legs. Dewclaws on the forelegs may be removed.

Tail
Docked to a medium length and carried slightly higher than the level of the back.

Coat
Quality, texture and quantity of coat are of prime importance. Hair is glossy, fine and silky in texture. Coat on the body is moderately long and perfectly straight (not wavy). It may be trimmed to floor length to give ease of movement and a neater appearance, if desired. The fall on the head is long, tied with one bow in center of head or parted in the middle and tied with two bows. Hair on muzzle is very long. Hair should be trimmed short on tips of ears and may be trimmed on feet to give them a neat appearance.

Colors
Puppies are born black and tan and are normally darker in body color, showing an intermingling of black hair in the tan until they are matured. Color of hair on body and richness of tan on head and legs are of prime importance in adult dogs, to which the following color requirements apply: Blue: Is a dark steel-blue, not a silver-blue and not mingled with fawn, bronzy or black hairs. Tan: All tan hair is darker at the roots than in the middle, shading to still lighter tan at the tips. There should be no sooty or black hair intermingled with any of the tan.

Color on Body
The blue extends over the body from back of neck to root of tail. Hair on tail is a darker blue, especially at end of tail.

Headfall
A rich golden tan, deeper in color at sides of head, at ear roots and on the muzzle, with ears a deep rich tan. Tan color should not extend down on back of neck.

Chest and Legs
A bright, rich tan, not extending above the elbow on the forelegs nor above the stifle on the hind legs.

Weight
Must not exceed seven pounds.
